## Why we recommend it

We still detour through it on the way home. Go once at nine in the morning when the square is empty and the light is on the guildhall gables, then again at night when they are lit. They are two different places.

## About

The Grand-Place is the reason most people come to Brussels, and it earns it.
The square was largely rebuilt after the French bombardment of 1695, which is
why the guildhouses share a single, coherent late-baroque skyline rather than
the patchwork you would expect from buildings raised by competing trades.

The Hôtel de Ville is the one survivor of the bombardment, and its tower is
deliberately off-centre, a quirk that has attracted a great deal of invented
folklore about a despairing architect. He did not jump.

Every two years in August the square is covered by a **flower carpet** of
begonias. In December it holds the Christmas market and a sound-and-light show
that is either charming or unbearable depending on the crowd.
