Place du Grand Sablon

A sloping square of antique dealers, chocolatiers and cafés, with a weekend antiques market, ten minutes uphill from the apartment.

The Place du Grand Sablon in Brussels at dawn, its clipped hedges and corner cafés with the dome of the Palais de Justice beyond

The Sablon sits on the slope between the lower town and the Palais de Justice, and the walk up from the Grand-Place is the point as much as the square itself. It is lined with antique dealers and art galleries, several long-established chocolate houses, and cafés with terraces that catch the afternoon sun.

At weekends an antiques and books market fills the upper end of the square, beside the church of Notre-Dame du Sablon. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the time to see it.

Across the road, the Square du Petit Sablon is a small formal garden with a fountain and benches, and a good place to sit down when the square itself is busy.

This is where we go when the centre gets too busy. It is ten minutes uphill and a different city: fewer waffle stands, more people taking their time over one coffee.
