A food court in a former bank hall, with a couple of dozen kitchens around shared tables. No reservations, and it works for groups.
Jat' takes its name from the Brussels word for a mug, which sets the tone: this is a coffee shop rather than a café in the old Belgian sense. Wooden fittings throughout, a counter of pastries and muffins, and bagel sandwiches that make it a lunch stop as much as a coffee one.
The weekend brunch runs until the middle of the afternoon: eggs with bacon or salmon, viennoiseries, fresh juice, fruit salad or yoghurt.
Why it works for a Sunday
A good deal of central Brussels shuts on Sunday, and Jat' does not. If you are staying near the Grand-Place and want somewhere to sit with a coffee and a newspaper on a Sunday morning, the walk up to Rue de Namur is a short one.
The mix of people is the other reason to go. Students from the nearby faculties, families with children in tow, and the specialty-coffee crowd all end up at the same wooden tables, which makes it an easier room to bring children into than a quiet dining place.
Getting there
Walk up through the Mont des Arts to the Place Royale, then straight on into Rue de Namur. The café is a couple of hundred metres down on the left, before the street opens out at Porte de Namur.
It sits on a small street between the royal quarter and Porte de Namur, so you get the historic city at one end and business-as-usual Brussels at the other. All wood inside, and the tables fill up with families, students and the local hipster contingent in roughly equal measure. Open on Sundays, which is rarer here than you would expect.
