Musée Magritte

Five floors devoted to René Magritte, holding the world's largest collection of his work.

The Magritte Museum on the Place Royale in Brussels, with the giant green apple installed on its roof

The collection runs chronologically from the top floor down, which means you start with the early Futurist-influenced work and finish in the late period everyone recognises. It is a good argument for taking the lift up and walking down.

Like the rest of the Fine Arts complex, it is closed on Mondays, and entry is free on the first Wednesday of the month from 13:00.

The museum sits on the Place Royale and connects internally to the Musée Old Masters, so the two can be done on one ticket if you have the stamina. The Mont des Arts gardens are the way back down to the lower town.

Go early on a weekday and you can have the top floor almost to yourself. It is the rare single-artist museum that is the right length. You leave still interested.
