The façade

Monumental façade in baroque style with classical features, in the giant order spanning the 2 upper floors, curved pediment topped by a gable. Rich decorative program consisting of 3 bas-reliefs (the 2 lateral ones are originals, attributed to Pieter Van Dievoet), the coat of arms and the equestrian statue of Charles of Lorraine at the top of the gable. The reliefs represent the picking of hops, the transport of barrels and the harvest.

History and restorations

Reconstruction in 1698 (Architect Willem De Bruyne). Restoration in 1893-1900; most recent restoration by the City completed in 2008.

Did you know

This is the only house on the square that has regained its function as a place of representation for a professional association. The cellars house a brewery museum. The current equestrian statue is the fifth to be installed on this site.
