The façade
Façade with 4 very elongated levels under a pediment in the antique style, reflecting a very modern style at the time of its construction. Elaborate decorative program, primarily devoted to the theme of vice and virtue. Speaking signboard, probably original, by Marc De Vos. The god Apollo with his bow on the pediment, and phoenix at the top, the symbol of rebirth by fire. Ironwork on the doors with intertwining letters of the first names "Antonius" and "Sebastianus", the patron saints of archers.
History and restorations
Construction in 1690-1691 following a fire. Architect Pieter Herbosch. Reconstruction in 1696 with the entire façade preserved, except for its pediment. Restoration in 1890-1892 to its 1691 appearance; most recent restoration by the City completed in 2015.
Did you know
The 1691 façade, spared during the bombardment of the city in 1695, served as a model for the reconstruction of the rest of the Grand Place.
